Ants might seem like minor nuisances compared to rodents or termites, but they are highly organized social insects that can quickly contaminate food and overrun your living spaces. In Chennai, hot summer months and sudden monsoon rains drive colonies indoors in search of sugar, proteins, and moisture.

Using regular aerosol sprays only kills the few foraging ants you see walking across the kitchen counter. Within a few hours, the colony's queen will lay more eggs to replace them, and the workers will simply find a new route. To resolve an ant problem permanently, you must identify the species and target the nest.

Common Ant Species Found in Chennai

The three most frequent ant invaders in local apartments and bungalows are:

1. Red Imported Fire Ants

These ants are small, copper-brown to reddish-black in color. They construct small mud mounds in gardens and potted plants. Their stings are extremely painful, causing burning sensations and itchy white pustules on the skin—posing a significant risk to toddlers and pets playing outdoors.

2. Carpenter Ants

These are large, dark black ants. Unlike termites, they do not eat wood; instead, they hollow it out to build nesting galleries. If you see sawdust (frass) under wooden doors, window frames, or attic rafter beams, it is likely carpenter ants at work.

3. Pharaoh Ants & Sugar Ants

Very tiny, light-yellow to light-brown ants that breed inside walls, under floor tiles, and near water pipes. They have a sweet tooth, swarming sugar jars, honey bottles, and soda spills within minutes. Because their nests are hidden behind cement or drywall, they are notoriously difficult to eradicate.

💡 Why DIY Ant Sprays Make the Problem Worse: Pharaoh ants react to strong surface sprays by "budding". This means the colony senses danger and splits into multiple smaller nests, spreading throughout your home instead of staying in one location. Always prefer bait gels over sprays for small ants.

How Professional Ant Baiting Works

Professional ant control relies on the social behavior of the insects. We apply a targeted baiting strategy:

  1. Identify Trails: We locate the exact paths worker ants use to transport food back to the nest.
  2. Apply Gel Baits: We place specialized chemical gel baits in safe, hidden corners. The bait is formulated with a slow-acting active ingredient combined with a sweet food attractant.
  3. Colony Elimination: The worker ants eat the gel, carry it back to the hidden nest, and feed it to the queen and larvae. Within 3 to 5 days, the chemical spreads throughout the entire population, eliminating the nest from the inside.
