Termite infestation signs Chennai

Termites are called the "silent destroyers" for good reason — they can eat through wood, flooring, and even wallpaper without any immediate signs of damage. In Chennai's warm, humid climate, termites are extremely active year-round. By the time most homeowners discover a termite infestation, significant structural damage has already occurred.

Knowing the early warning signs can save you lakhs of rupees in repair costs. Here are the 10 most important signs to watch for in your Chennai home.

The 10 Warning Signs

1

Mud Tubes on Walls and Foundations

Subterranean termites build pencil-width mud tubes to travel between their colony and food sources. Look for these brown tubes along foundation walls, inside cupboards, and around pipes. This is one of the most definitive signs of termite activity.

2

Hollow or Blistered Wood

Tap on wooden surfaces — furniture, door frames, window sills, and floorboards. If they sound hollow, termites may have eaten through from the inside, leaving only a thin veneer. Wood that blisters or appears water-damaged can also indicate termites.

3

Discarded Wings Near Windows

Swarmer termites (alates) shed their wings after finding a new nest location. Finding piles of tiny, equal-length wings near window sills or doorways is a strong sign that a termite colony has established itself nearby.

4

Frass — Termite Droppings

Drywood termites produce small, wood-coloured pellets called frass. You'll find small piles of this sawdust-like material below infested wood or near exit holes in walls. This is specifically a sign of drywood termites common in older Chennai homes.

5

Clicking or Head-Banging Sounds

Soldier termites bang their heads against wood to signal danger to the colony. Quiet clicking sounds in your walls, particularly at night, can indicate an active termite infestation. Worker termites are also noisy eaters.

6

Tight-Fitting Doors and Windows

Termites produce moisture when eating and tunneling through wood, causing wood to warp. If doors or windows suddenly become difficult to open or close, it could be a sign of termite damage rather than normal humidity effects.

7

Visible Mazes in Wood

If you see galleries or maze-like patterns when you break open a piece of damaged wood, this is a clear sign of termite tunnel networks. This is most commonly seen in old furniture, wooden beams, or door frames.

8

Sagging Floors or Ceilings

In severe infestations, termites can cause structural damage that leads to sagging or buckling floors, ceilings, and walls. If you notice unusual structural changes, particularly in older homes, suspect termite damage immediately.

9

Paint Bubbling or Peeling

Moisture from termite activity can cause paint to bubble, peel, or appear water-damaged. This often occurs on walls adjacent to infested wooden structures or in areas where termites are travelling inside walls.

10

Visible Live Termites

While termites usually hide inside wood, you may see them during swarming season (typically June–August in Chennai after rains). They look like white ants but have straight antennae and equal-length wings. If you see live termites, act immediately.

💡 Important Note:If you see even one of these signs in your Chennai home, do not wait. Call a professional pest control service immediately for a free inspection. Early detection and treatment can save you from extensive and expensive repair work.

What to Do If You Suspect Termites

  1. Don't disturb the area — avoid breaking mud tubes or disturbing infested wood as this can cause termites to relocate and make treatment harder
  2. Document what you see — take photographs of mud tubes, damage, or swarmers for the pest control technician
  3. Call a professional immediately — DIY termite treatments are rarely effective for established colonies
  4. Get a thorough inspection — a professional will assess all areas including roof, foundation, and interior woodwork
